ChatGPT: What it is and how it can help your content team

Artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT are playing an increasingly important role in content planning and delivery. Find out how you can use ChatGPT to deliver engaging content and what pitfalls you should be aware of.

How ChatGPT works

Chat GPT (also known as Generative Pre-trained Transformer) is a language model.

It’s designed to capture the statistical patterns and structures of natural language. This allows it to make predictions and generate text based on what information you put in.

Language models are typically built on large amounts of text data. They’re trained to learn the relationships between words, phrases, and sentences.

Language models such as GPT-3.5 (which powers ChatGPT) are designed to understand and generate text at a sophisticated level. This means they can help with tasks such as content generation, translation and customer support.

Using AI responsibly

While ChatGPT can help you streamline your content strategy, you should be aware of the pitfalls and limitations of using AI tools.

Using new technologies can help you reduce your workload. But identifying your audience’s needs based on solid evidence should always be your guiding light for producing effective content.

How you can access ChatGPT

You can access ChatGPT simply by visiting chat.openai.com and creating an OpenAI account. Get your conversation started by asking a question.

ChatGPT is currently free to use, because it’s in its research and feedback-collection phase. A paid subscription version called ChatGPT Plus launched at the beginning of February 2023.

How to generate content using ChatGPT

You can use ChatGPT to generate content ideas, brainstorm topics and draft content.

By providing prompts or questions related to your subject, you’ll get relevant  suggestions.

But, remember. Any prompts you give AI tools should be based on solid research about your audience’s needs. Basing your prompts on evidence means that any AI-generated content will reflect real people’s needs.

Be vigilant

ChatGPT is not a substitute for human creativity and judgment.

Always:
  • review and curate the answers it provides
  • align it with your organisation’s voice, style, and goals

Engage your audience

ChatGPT can also help you craft engaging social media posts, email newsletters, or interactive chatbots.

This means it can help you encourage your audience to interact with content.

Improve your customer support

ChatGPT can help you improve your customer support. You can integrate it into your website or messaging platforms to provide an automated response to common queries.

Instant responses will mean timely assistance for your customers, giving them a brilliant user experience. It will also reduce the workload on your support team.

Personalise and improve your content

ChatGPT can help you tailor content to people’s individual needs.

For example, you can collect your user’s information and preferences and use ChatGPT to generate:
  • product descriptions
  • curated content lists
  • personalised recommendations (such as emails or suggested pages)
ChatGPT is also useful for refining and polishing existing content. For example, you can input sections of your articles, blog posts, or marketing materials and then get suggestions for improvements.

This makes it an useful tool to complement your editing skills. It means you can quickly enhance the quality and readability of your content before publishing.
